Through our project monitoring and policy advocacy, BIC pushes for safer, more inclusive, and more meaningful opportunities for civil society and communities to have a voice in the development process.
BIC calls on the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to increase their commitments to transparency and provide increased public access to information about development projects they finance. MDBs should also improve opportunities for those who will be directly impacted by development projects to be involved in their design and implementation, and greater attention to addressing the chilling effects that restricted civic space and the fear of reprisals can have on engagement.
Most MDBs disclose project documents and other information on their websites according to an Access to Information Policy.
MDBs usually require their clients or borrowers to consult with stakeholders who could be impacted by a project.
According to the 2024 CIVICUS monitor, about 7 in 10 people live in countries with closed or repressed civic space, including many places where MDBs work.
