About BIC
Who Are We?
BIC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that advocates for transparency, accountability, sustainability, and inclusion in development finance. BIC is completely independent of governments and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and aims to be community-driven.
Why Does BIC
Exist?
The policies and programs of MDBs can exacerbate climate change, undermine human rights, and further marginalize people who have historically faced discrimination. We stand with those whose health, livelihoods, homes, sacred sites, and support systems are threatened by the development process, and work to reform the development finance system to prevent harm to people and the planet.
Our Vision
Development is driven by communities, reduces poverty and inequality, sustains the environment, and fulfills human rights.
Our Mission
BIC promotes social, environmental, and economic justice by amplifying local voices and democratizing development.
What Do
We Do?
BIC partners with civil society in borrower countries to monitor and influence the policies and operations of the World Bank Group and other MDBs.
Research & Advocacy
In partnership with international, regional, and local civil society organizations, BIC conducts research and advocacy aimed at improving and reforming MDB policy and practices and preventing any backsliding.

Our Work
BIC was founded in the 1980s to serve as a bridge between civil society around the world and development finance institutions, which were financing development projects that profoundly impacted people’s lives. In recent years, shifting power structures and the rise of new institutions have dramatically altered the development finance landscape, and restricted space for civil society continues to make engagement in the development process difficult, risky, or even impossible. Staying ahead of this rapidly evolving backdrop requires us to seek new opportunities for advancing our mission, and makes our work even more important today than when we were founded over 30 years ago.
BIC's Impact
Explore examples we have gathered from partners, allies, and senior staff describing their experiences working with BIC. From child rights issues in Nepal to the creation of a working group for civil society organizations to engage with the IDB, we have found success in pushing for greater accountability, transparency, and inclusion of all stakeholders at the World Bank and other MDBs.
