Through our project monitoring and policy advocacy, BIC pushes for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) policies, projects, and programs, so that persons with disabilities can benefit from, and not be harmed by, MDB operations.
BIC calls on MDBs to help design and adequately supervise disability-inclusive projects and programs. This includes pushing MDBs and Borrowers to meaningfully consult with organizations of persons with disabilities throughout the project lifecycle and to close the feedback loop.
An estimated 1.3 billion people experience significant disability. This represents 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us.
Persons with disabilities are often included in Multilateral Development Bank safeguard policies under “disadvantaged or vulnerable groups.”
Universal access is frequently the entry point for Multilateral Development Banks on disability inclusion.
We support our partners in combining research, monitoring, and strategic engagement to track project implementation, amplify community concerns, and push institutions to address gaps and risks.
