Who Are We?

BIC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that advocates for transparency, accountability, sustainability, and inclusion in development finance. BIC is completely independent of governments and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and aims to be community-driven.

World Bank commissions first ever Independent Review of a project: Sardar Sarovar Dam, canceling the loan soon after

1993

Inspection Panel is created at the World Bank

1994

World Bank creates Information Disclosure Policy

1994

The Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) creates its first independent accountability mechanism, the Independent Investigation Mechanism

1997

World Bank creates first suite of Environmental and Social Safeguard policies

1999

World Bank creates Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, accountability mechanism of the IFC

2010

The IDB Group creates the Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism (MICI)

2012

IFC adopts updated Performance Standards

2015

Uganda Transport Sector Development Project case is filed at the Inspection Panel

2016

World Bank approves Environmental and Social Framework

2019

Civil Society creates the IDB Working Group

2020

The IDB approves new Environmental and Social Policy Framework and IDB Invest approves new Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy

2024

IFC/MIGA’s Approach to Responsible Exit is approved
