Understanding the African Development Bank: A Guide for CSOs and Communities

The CSO Working Group on the African Development Bank (AfDB) launch a new toolkit for civil society and communities. The toolkit provides information on entry points for civil society organizations (CSOs) and communities to engage with the AfDB and hold the institution accountable.

Understanding the AfDB: A Guide for Civil Society and Communities focuses on the entry points for how to engage with the AfDB. It functions as a guide for civil society organizations and communities and provides:

1) An overview of the AfDB's mission, structure, and how it works

2) Information on key environmental and social policies and how to submit complaints to the Independent Recourse Mechanism

3) Advocacy tips on how to demand respect for rights when they are violated in the context of AfDB-financed projects

The toolkit was developed and published in May, 2023 by members of the CSO Working Group on the AfDB, including Accountability Counsel, Arab Watch Coalition, Bank Information Center (BIC), Both ENDS, Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), Coalition for Human Rights in Development, International Accountability Project (IAP), and Lumière Synergie pour le Développement (LSD).
